Keyamo made his position known in a post on his verified X handle on Friday, describing Atiku’s manner of addressing the President as “very disrespectful and discourteous.”
The minister argued that political disagreements should not diminish the dignity attached to the office of the President, regardless of differences between political opponents.
“The continuous reference to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by His Excellency, ex-Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, in his press conference earlier as ‘Bola’ is very disrespectful and discourteous,” Keyamo said.
“He should know better that no matter your differences with Mr President, for the sake of the country, that office should be accorded all the dignity it deserves.”
Keyamo also described the tone of Atiku’s remarks as reflecting personal resentment, saying, “The tone reeks of pain and bitterness in his heart.”
Atiku had addressed journalists at a press conference in Abuja on Friday, where he called on Tinubu to take measures to reduce the cost of petrol and ease the economic pressure on Nigerians. He said the President could adopt his proposed intervention even if he chose to rename it and take credit for the idea.
Atiku’s comments on petrol prices came amid his wider criticism of the government’s handling of rising living costs and energy prices.
